Tools Of The Trade asked me if they could interview me about how I got started as a celebrity makeup artist and to share my tools of the trade.  I hope you enjoy it!

Terri Apanasewicz has worked on some of the most gorgeous faces in the modeling business, including Gisele Bündchen, Cindy Crawford, Kate Upton and Marisa Miller. The makeup artist recently showed us her enviable travel kit, and shared her background and must-have favorites while we were admiring her beauty stash.

Raised by two corporate executives, the only things I knew about growing up were business and sports. I was a competitive figure skater as a child. Though I designed my costumes and choreographed my routines, I didn’t see myself as artistic. To me, it was all just part of the sport.

When I was 19, I discovered that being a makeup artist was an actual job while watching the credits of a soap opera. I ran to my bathroom and got out my Conair makeup mirror—the one that had three settings for different lighting—and I started playing with my makeup over and over again. I then called 411 (remember, there were no computers back then) and got the phone numbers to Revlon and Max Factor. Finally some nice woman told me about a makeup school she had heard of in Los Angeles called the Joe Blasco Makeup Artist Training Center. In that moment, my life path changed.

Today my clients love the fact that I work fast and efficiently while maintaining a calm environment. I love to enhance their own unique, natural beauty rather than creating a mask. A flawless complexion and a smoky eye are my signature looks that are often requested. Here are some of my favorite products in my case:

Lowel Tota-Light: Complete with an adjustable stand and white umbrella, it goes everywhere with me to ensure I give myself and my clients the best possible lighting experience.

Chanel Hydra Beauty Sérum: This product is incredible. I use it as a moisturizer before applying makeup. It’s also perfect for helping me keep makeup fresh throughout the day because it works with the makeup already applied and doesn’t break it down.

Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer: This is my go-to concealer for everyone. It is named appropriately because it is truly amazing! Highly pigmented and very emollient, a little goes a long way. Applying less keeps the skin looking naturally flawless rather than looking like you’ve covered up problem areas. It also comes in 10 shades—soon to be 20—so the color spectrum is a makeup artist’s dream!

Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation: This is one of my mainstays for foundation. I love the variety in color, and yet I generally only carry three or four because I can usually mix what I have to match anyone’s skin tone.

Amazing Cosmetics Powder Set: I love this powder because it is so finely milled. It’s really translucent so I can use it on any skin tone without fear of the skin going dull. And best of all, it doesn’t get cakey.

YSL Crème de Blush: I’m so happy they brought these back on the market. I apply Crème de Blush with a brush to ensure an even application.

Anastasia Brow Powder Duo, Perfect Brow Pencil and Tinted Brow Gel: Anastasia brow products have been staples in my kit for years. Whether you like to work with a pencil, powder or gel, the perfect color is available.

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara: I always seem to come back to this mascara even with all the other good ones on the market. My choice in color is Carbon Black. It’s rich in color, enhances thickness and lengthens lashes.

MAC Fluidline: This gel liner is a definite must-have because I can always count on it becoming anything I want it to be—whether it’s a ’60s geometric line or a sultry smudge. And once I get it in the right place, it doesn’t move.

Ardell Lashes: I keep a big variety of lashes on hand, but Ardell has always got a look that I want. I love the invisible bands and the knot-free individual bundles.

Mally Perfect Prep Lip System: There are so many lip colors and formulas to talk about, and I always have a very broad selection in my kit. But there is only one thing I love to prep the lips with and that’s Mally Perfect Prep Lip System. It includes a gentle sugar scrub and two lip balms that ensure your lips are smooth and ready for color.
